w systematyce rodzaj w rodzinie żabowatych (Ranidae) w obrębie rzędu płazów bezogonowych (Anura). Na świecie 51 gatunków (wg danych z 2019 r.), w Polsce trzy: żaba moczarowa (Rana arvalis), żaba trawna (Rana temporaria) i żaba zwinka (żaba dalmatyńska) (Rana dalmatina).
